Background
SUMMARY STATEMENT:
With the resignation of Councilmember, and now State Representative, Maria Syms, the
Paradise Valley Town Council has a vacancy. Arizona statute grants the Mayor and Town Council the power to fill that vacancy; however, the process in which they arrive at the appointment is not defined and subject to a great deal of discretion. The purpose of this study session is to determine the process by which the Town will fill the vacancy.
Attached please find a memo from Town Attorney Andrew Miller dated June 8, 2000. His advice is still relevant and provides a solid foundation of different processes the Mayor & Council may choose to employ.
