Background
SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The terms of certain board and committee members will expire March 31, 2017. Approval of the appointments listed below will provide the Town with the required number of members to fulfill the legal responsibilities of each of committee.
On September 22, 2016, the Town Council adopted Ordinance Number 2016-05 changing the terms of office for most committees from October 1 to April 1. The ordinance also extended the terms of incumbents six months. The decision to amend the effective dates was in response to the consolidated elections law which switched the date Council Members take office from June to January. Moving the appointment process to the spring allows newly elected Council to take office, hold a policy and goal retreat, and conduct committee interviews and make appointment decisions based on the new Council’s policy direction.
In accordance with Town practice, committee members whose terms expire this year were asked to provide written statements expressing their interest in being reappointed. The names of those wishing to continue their service were forwarded to the Mayor for nomination. Vacancies were advertised on the Town’s website, social media, and in the Town of Paradise Valley Independent Newspaper. The Town received a total of 25 applications for seven vacancies.
Appointments to the Planning Commission were completed on March 9th. Appointments to the Board of Adjustment and Hillside Building Committee will be handled separately following interviews on March 23rd.
The Arts Advisory Committee has included eight members since 2015. Louise McCall passed away recently and Bunny Gordon resigned earlier this month creating two vacancies. The Committee met twice to consider six applicants. They recommended Diana Georgelos, Barbara Terranova, and Colleen Steinberg to the Mayor for nomination. It is recommended that Ms. Steinberg be appointed to fill Ms. Gordon’s unexpired term. These three new appointments will increase the total number of Arts Advisory Committee members from eight to nine.
The Advisory Committee on Public Safety (ACOPS) met on March 14, 2017 to interview three finalists from the pool of seven who applied. ACOPS recommended Chuck Matthews to the Mayor for nomination.
