Informational Update on Cherokee Elementary School Renovation Project

SUMMARY STATEMENT:
In April of 2019 the Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board voted to rebuild Cherokee Elementary School located at 8801 North 56th Street. The property is located within the Town of Paradise Valley and is zoned R-43. Typically, non-residential uses in the Town are governed by Special Use Permits that regulate height, setbacks, lighting, and signs which would require Planning Commission and Town Council deliberation and approval. As a public school, Cherokee Elementary is considered a governmental function of the state and is thus exempt from the Town's Zoning regulations under Arizona law. The public schools are, however, still required to meet all statewide life and safety requirements. Building and site plans will be reviewed by Town staff to ensure these life safety requirements are met prior to the start of construction.
While they are not required to, the Cherokee Elementary design team met with Town staff throughout the design process to ensure they were meeting the intent of the Town's SUP guidelines and ensure we had an early opportunity to provide comments. In addition, their design team held multiple public meetings to receive public and Town staff input. Neither the Town Council nor the Planning Commission will be reviewing the proposal per our typical SUP process, but the school district and Town staff thought an update to Town Council and the public would be beneficial.
