Interviews for Committee, Commission, and Board Appointments
Body
Council Goals or Other Policies / Statutory Requirements:
Governance - Town Code 2-5 - Council nomination and appointment of volunteers
RECOMMENDATION:
Conduct interviews for committee and board appointments.
SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The Town of Paradise Valley has a proud history of volunteer service to the community. In addition to all-volunteer Town Council Members and Municipal Court Judges, more than 50 residents donate their time and expertise to the Town by serving on various committees, commissions, and boards. Residents are invited to submit applications online throughout the year expressing their interest in volunteering. All applications received by the second week in February are reviewed and considered by the Mayor and Council during the committee appointment and reappointment process.
The attached timeline details the appointment process. Consistent with past practice, committee members whose terms expire this year were contacted to ascertain their interest in being reappointed. The attached summary chart shows that 20 committee members have requested to be reappointed and four vacancies have been identified. Those vacancies include one on the Board of Adjustment resulting from Anna Thomasson’s election to the Town Council, one on the Advisory Committee on Public Safety (ACOPS), and two on the Municipal Property Corporation (MPC).
The Board of Adjustment and ACOPS vacancies were advertised on the Town’s website, social media and the Town of Paradise Valley Independent Newspaper in January. The Mayor’s recommendation was not to advertise the MPC vacancies because all the bond debt they oversee has been retired; therefore, the committee will not be active unless the Town decides to issue bonds in the future. Section 3.04 of the MPC bylaws provides that membership shall be comprised of not less than three and no more than twelve. The MPC will remain in existence, but membership will be reduced from seven to five.
A total of 9 applications were received by the February 15th deadline. All applicants were invited to meet with the Council on either February 29 or March 14. One applicant will be out of town on both those dates but would still like to be considered. Interviews are scheduled for 15-minutes each. Committee appointments and Council liaison assignments will be made on March 28. The new terms will start April 1.
Application materials for all candidates are attached.
