Background

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

Arizona law requires the Town Council meet to canvass the votes within 20 days of an election.  The attached resolution certifies the election results, declares the winners, and serves as a permanent public record of the canvass.

A total of 4,394 valid ballots were cast in the Primary Election held on August 28, 2018.  Voter turnout equaled 41.6%.  The 18-year turnout range is 30% to 44% and the average is 34.9%.

The final results show that Jerry Bien-Willner was elected mayor with 3,387 votes.  Anna Thomasson, Ellen Andeen, and Paul Dembow were elected to the four-year terms on the Town Council.  All four candidates for Town Council received more than a majority of the total votes cast, as determined by the formula in A.R.S. §9-821.01.  In this election a majority was more than 1,470 votes.  In accordance with Paragraph E of the statute, the three candidates with the highest number of votes equal to the number of seats to be filled for the office shall be declared elected to office.

In addition to the data in the attached resolution, there were 86 provisional ballots cast in Paradise Valley, of which 76 were counted and 10 were not counted.
