Background

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Town of Paradise Valley was presented with the prestigious “Voice of the People for Excellence in Foundations of Livability” by The National Citizen Survey in collaboration with the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) at an awards ceremony in San Antonio on October 23, 2017.  The award is given to local governments based on the opinion of the residents themselves.  Only those jurisdictions receiving the highest or most improved rating on the 2016 National Citizen Survey were selected as winners.

In May of 2016, Paradise Valley residents participated in The National Citizen Survey.  It measures resident opinion and satisfaction with local government and services with a scientific, representative sample approach.  It includes questions about the quality of life in the community, local policies, demographics, rating of local governments services, and resident use of services.   It is designed to provide a baseline of how town government is servicing residents, to gauge perceptions of the town, and make comparisons with peer cities and towns.

The Town’s results were impressive.  The survey compared Paradise Valley results against three benchmarks: the national database (over 500 communities); Arizona municipalities (15 communities); and those communities with annual household incomes over $120,000 (14 communities).  Paradise Valley earned a 97% approval rating for overall quality of life - ranking the Town number one in Arizona, number one among higher income cities, and number two nationally.

Deputy Town Manager Dawn Marie Buckland accepted the award on behalf of the Town at the ICMA Annual Conference.  Nicole Palmquist, Administrative Support Specialist in Public Works, was the lead staff person on the Citizen Survey and will present it to the Mayor and Council during the business meeting on November 16, 2017.
