Accept two Governor’s Office of Highway Safety DUI grant for $20,000 each.
Background
SUMMARY STATEMENT:
In FY 2019, the Police Department participated in the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety grant. During FY 19, the GOHS grant allowed officers to work overtime shifts in order to specifically seek traffic violations and DUI violators. The two grants totaled $40,000 and allowed concentrated enforcement of traffic violations. Through the first three-quarters of the federal FY 18, officers have completed 14 DUI arrests and made 197 traffic stops.
In 2019, the increased visibility of patrol officers provided by the GOHS grant explains a portion of the 18% decrease in traffic collisions in Paradise Valley versus the three-year average.
The GOHS has offered the Town of Paradise Valley two grants during this federal fiscal year. The grants are to enforce DUI ($20,000) and Traffic laws ($20,000). These grants cover the officer’s overtime wage and 40% of the employee related expenses associated with the employee, which includes part of the PSPRS match.
BUDGETARY IMPACT:
The acceptance of the $20,000 DUI grant costs the town approximately $5,000 because of the town’s PSPRS match. Likewise, the acceptance of the $20,000 traffic enforcement grant costs the town approximately $5,000 because of the town’s PSPRS match. The total cost to the town to accept these two grants will be approximately $10,000, which will be covered in the current year’s budget.
